Year Five

Mr Gribbin
Year 5

Welcome to year 5!

We are travelling back in time this term and studying all things ancient Greece. We will be exploring their culture and how they started the very first Olympic Games. We will look at the role Greek gods and goddesses played, and even discover some magical, mythical creatures.

In English, we will be reading Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan to help us with our topic. We will be using the text to inspire us to create our very own myths – including designing our own fearsome beasts.

We will be reading a lot this year and learning new and exciting vocabulary. It is important that children are reading at home every night, and we ask that you help them with this, asking questions to make sure they have understood what they have read. We will be launching our 15 Book Children, with children set the target of reading 15 books between now and Christmas.

In maths, we will continue to master the four operations and improve our reasoning and problem-solving skills. It is important that children know their times tables up to 12 x 12, so please keep on practising these with your child at home.

We will be having swimming lessons every Friday at Heworth Leisure Centre, so please make sure your child has their kit on this day. PE for Year 5 is every Tuesday.

Homework will be sent home every Friday and is due in the following Wednesday. If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to ask.

Mr Gribbin.
