Here at St Oswald’s we teach phonics in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 through Linking Letters and Sounds document to ensure all sounds are covered.
Children in Reception Class are taught daily in class for 20 minutes working their way through phases 1-3. Children in Year 1 and 2 are taught in small differentiated groups for 20 minutes a day and complete a spelling test on Fridays to show they have understood the phonics they have been learning during the week. Each group focus upon the phase which is suitable for the children to ensure they have good phonics knowledge before moving on to further stages.
Year 1 complete the phonics test in June to see if they meet National requirements. If they do not meet national standard they re-sit the test in Year 2. To provide the children in Year 2, who did not pass the test, with a stronger understanding of phonics there are intervention groups during the week to deliver more phonics practice and consolidation opportunities.
